24. Alex’s reknitting project, with samples.

Anne chose to renew a favourite Fair Isle jumper belonging to her daughter. She initially described the replacement of the damaged cuffs and welt as a ‘repair’, rather than ‘design’, task. Having had the idea to knit multicoloured, rather than plain, trims, however, the project became more exciting. Anne tried out various ways of working the trims, and we were amazed to find some 4-ply yarns in my studio that provided an excellent colour match for the original fabric. By experimenting with needle size, she was able to match the gauge of the original rib. She then repaired a few holes in the main body by knitting small patches onto the fabric. Both Anne and her daughter were pleased with the finished outcome, feeling that the jumper had been given a new lease of life.

Catherine bought the cardigan that she chose to rework in a charity shop, attracted by its colour and luxurious yarn. Yet the item was ‘rather sad’ in its current state: it had no buttons and was much too large for her to wear. Catherine chose to shorten the sleeves of her cardigan to solve the size problem, and used a scarf as inspiration for the colours of the new trim. It was difficult for her to pick up the stitches of the extremely fine knit, but she developed a successful method of doing so as the work progressed. Catherine used the spare fabric from the sleeves to create a patch pocket with trim and added vintage Bakelite buttons. A few weeks after completing the project, she reported that she had worn her reworked cardigan to a friend’s wedding, and ‘almost constantly since’.
